Training Your Dog to Behave Off the Leash

Your Dog Should Know To Behave Well Even When Off Leash

Off leash exercise should be an important part of the dog’s daily routine from an early age. This will help the puppy to enjoy his freedom. Also, off leash game of ‘ fetching a ball’ and a good run helps to mentally and physically stimulate the pup, which is a must for every dog, Some people are apprehensive about keeping their pets off leash.

Some of their common excuses are:Dog will run away : People often complain that since their dogs get attracted to other dogs, people walking by, or cats, besides moving objects such as vehicles or balls, they are likely run after them and get into problems. This mainly happens because the dog is never given a chance to explore his surroundings off leash and is not trained not to chase things or moving objects.

Chase behavior: Most people complain that once off leash, their dogs chase cats, kids and other moving objects. Chasing instinct is an inborn trait in most of the dogs and is high in some. You should identify the objects your dog likes to chase and then train him not to chase them accordingly.

Dog will jump on other people: If the dog’s is generally friendly, he might want to go towards people and due to excitement, he might even jump over them. This happens due to lack of socialization during his puppy hood.

Dog will never return when called: Some people are not confident that their dog will return to them, when called once off leash. This happens because initially when the dog does come back, most of us try to catch him by his neck/ collar and put his back on the leash. This teaches the dog that if he goes back, he will be put on the leash and taken back home, and so keeps staying away. But, off leash control can treat to your dog.

Here are the steps to teach the dog off leash control:

• Start training the dog for off leash control at an early age. You can start this game in your building compound, or terrace of any other safe place, before letting your dog off leash in a big ground or on the beach.

• In the beginning, attach a long leash (approx 10 x 12 feet) to the dog, and let him drag it with him.

• Do not hold on to the leash all the time but keep a timely check on the dog. You can always get hold of the leash in case of emergency.

• Always carry some tasty treats or the dog’s favorite toys to praise him when he Comes back. In beginning , you should praise your dog for every successful recall.

• Your body language and tone of voice should always be happy and encouraging, when calling the dog back.

• Never try to grab your dog’s collar when he comes back, just because you feel that he will run away again.

• Always leave your dog off leash in a safe place and not on the roads or while Crossing the roads etc. Always keep an eye on the dog, when he is off leash.

• In case the dog does not come back, do not run behind him or scold him when you catch him. This will only make the dog run away again. On such occasion, you can run in the opposite direction showing him the treats and toys in your hand so as to get him attention.

• You have to make yourself the most interesting thing for your dog. Only this will make the dog come back to you.

• Train your dog in different possible places before trusting him completely to go off leash. In a new place, you can always keep him on long leash initially.

• Last but very important, always walk your dog on leash in a particular area, and allow him to sniff around to his satisfaction, before you let him off leash.

Anti Bark Collars

Dogs bark, it’s a fact of a dogs life. But sometimes the dog’s barking can become excessive and disruptive to others. For this reason an anti bark collar is a good thing to purchase for your canine friend.

A dog barks for different reasons whether it is for attention, at someone, or if they feel threatened or feel that the owner is threatened. In any of these instances a bark collar can be used to keep the dog from barking excessively.

If there are neighbors close by or if your dog’s barking is scaring children, seriously considering purchasing a bark collar. A bark collar can make people feel safer when walking by the dog as some people are nervous around animals and can feel very hesitant when a dog is barking at them.

The Citronella collar and the shock collar are the two main types to choose from each with their own advantages and disadvantages. The Citronella version is a safe and humane way to keep a dog from barking. A light spray of Citronella in front of the dog’s nose is put out when the dog barks.

Dogs generally do not like Citronella or the hissing noise that is let out by the bark collar when the dog barks. The dog figures out quite quickly what is happening and the result is less barking. There are many types of the Citronella collars on the market.

The Citronella bark collar is seen as a more humane way to get a dog to stop barking. It has also shown to be twice as effective as a shock bark collar in making the canine stop barking.

The other type is thought to involve a more aggressive approach in quieting the animal down. This type of collar works much like a Citronella collar except that instead of a spray of Citronella the dog receives a little shock. The dog learns from their actions and stops barking as they do not like to get shocked.

Many see this type of bark collar as inhumane considering that it inflicts pain on the animal. Add to this the fact that they do not work as well as the Citronella type of bark collar.

The type you purchase will directly effect how your dog feels. Some give little shocks that are all the same while others increase the shock the more the dog barks.

If this approach does not work there are surgeries for debarking but they are seen as even more inhumane to the animal than the collars and most veterinarians will not suggest the operation. It’s much better to purchase an anti bark collar that is designed to help silence your four-legged rather loud friend.

Dog Training - Simplified

An article by
Melissa Wayan
June 13, 2006
Dog training is both frustrating and rewarding. It kills you to torment your poor puppy for months on end, trying to get them to understand commands that to them probably seem irrelevant and arbitrary. However, when they finally learn it is best for all. You are happy because they no longer eat your furniture or run away from you in the park. I am also convinced the puppy is now happier because he has learned how to manipulate you.

He has learned that when you are happy you give him treats and he has also learned the things that are most likely to make you happy. This is of course a beneficial relationship for all concerned. You get what you want and the dog gets what he wants, making everyone more pleased.

Some people say that the dog is actually happier because it craves rules and boundaries. Dogs will test you to see how far they can push you because they want you to define their limitations, to give them their place in the household. I am not sure how convincing I find this argument but it makes some sense, in the way it makes sense that children with rules and boundaries tend to be better adjusted as well.

For this reason among others dog training is an important part of any household that has a dog. I have seen the houses where the poor dog is locked outside all day and night with no affection and love because he is “out of control”. However in my experience this is normally because no one tried to control the dog and he was allowed to push his boundaries to the max until there ceased to be any. Dog training needs to be done, and to be done well in order for the dog to truly flourish.

How to Train Your Dog Not to Chase Things

by Michael Colucci
July 05, 2006
Dogs are natural carnivores, and have a tendency to chase things which move away from them. This includes people, cars, and other animals. While this may be normal, it can be dangerous, especially when they are chasing people or cars. Training your dog not to chase things is very important, and you want to start this training as soon as possible. If your puppy is a breed which will get big, you will want to get started while they're puppies.

Many people who are chased by a large dog will become afraid, and will do whatever it takes to protect themselves. If your dog should attack someone, you could be sued or prosecuted. This is a situation you don't want to find yourself in.

This is why it is important to train your dog while it is still a puppy. Some dogs can be trained easily, while others are more challenging. Breeds which have traditionally been used for hunting are the most difficult to deal with.

Until your dog is trained, you should never allow him off the leash. Doing this can put the dog and others in danger. Before taking your dog to a place where he will be likely to chase someone, begin by training him in a secure place like a yard which is surrounded by a fence.

The dog should be focused on you, and anything which will distract him should be removed. You will need to repeat the steps so that the dog understands what you want. You will want to start by putting the dog on a leash.

You will now want to stand with the dog at the end of a hallway or room. Take a ball and hold it in front of the dog without allowing him to make contact with it. After this, take the ball and roll it towards the opposite end of the room or hallway.

Use the word "off" to tell the dog not to chase the ball. If the dog gets up and tries to chase the ball, gently pull him back with the leash and say "off" again. Repeat this step until the dog doesn't chase the ball when you roll it. When he does this correctly, reward him with a treat.

Repeat this technique in different rooms of the house. As your dog continues to improve, take him off the leash, but keep him indoors. Once he has shown that he can do this indoors, take him outside and start the whole process over again.
